How do I obtain a driver education learner permit?

The applicant must take the following documents to the BMV:

  1. Official Birth Certificate. A County or State Board of Health or equivalent agency must have issued it.  NOTE: A souvenir birth certificate is not an official record. (Primary Document)
  2. Social Security card.
  3. School photo ID, report card, OR bank statement.  NOTE: Be sure your street address is on the document.  (Secondary Document and Proof of Residency)
  4. CDE (Certificate of Driver Education).  NEIDA will issue this form as proof you registered in a driver education course and dated no sooner than three weeks prior to the start of class.
Be prepared for the following:
  1. Permit fee.  It will cost $9.
  2. Financial Responsibility statement.  A parent or guardian with a valid Driver License or State ID must sign.
  3. Standard vision screening test.  You must pass a vision test.
Extent of Driving Privileges:
You may not drive on this permit until after the first day of your class, and then, only with a parent or your driving instructor.For detailed information on obtaining your driver education learner permit, click here.
